For cleaner edges
PNG Edge Cleaner
If a transparent character looks like it has a white or dark glow around its edges, compare a cleaned version before saving it.
Example: white edge → cleaner transparent PNG
Try this tool- 1. AddTransparent PNG or WebP
- 2. AdjustChoose the unwanted edge color
- 3. SaveCleaned PNG
1. Choose a transparent character image
Use this when the edges look pale or dark against another background. It cannot remove a solid background.
How to use it
1. Start with an image that already has transparency
Upload PNG or WebP and identify the unwanted fringe. A white halo visible against a dark scene is a useful test. A JPEG or fully opaque background needs background removal first, not this correction.
2. Match the unwanted edge color
Choose the known matte with Unwanted edge color. Adjust Correction strength and compare the original and corrected previews. The wrong matte can discolor intended edges; a stronger correction is not automatically better.
3. Separate faint-pixel cleanup from canvas trimming
Leave Remove very faint pixels at 0 unless stray low-opacity pixels are the problem. Keep Trim transparent padding off for fixed-size animation frames. Run correction again after changing options, inspect the result, and download the PNG.
A halo, low alpha, and extra padding need different fixes
Matte correction changes RGB in semi-transparent pixels by attempting to reverse a blend with a known color. It does not detect objects or erase opaque white areas. Painted highlights inside the character are not background to remove.
Alpha cutoff removes pixels at or below a value on the 0–255 scale. A cutoff of 16 removes pixels at roughly 6% opacity or less. It can clear specks but also erase intentional smoke or shadows. The control goes up to 64; it is not an automatic silhouette generator.
Trim crops the canvas to surviving pixels. That can help a static icon, but separately trimming poses changes their dimensions and offsets. Keep padding when your engine pivot or animation baseline relies on a stable frame canvas.
| Setting or input | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pale fringe on dark backgrounds | Correct matte, then correction strength |
| Faint detached specks | Small cutoff; recheck soft shadows |
| Too much empty canvas | Trim only if fixed alignment is unnecessary |
| Solid background | Background removal first |
Check before downloading
Check both a light and dark scene
A sprite that looks fixed on black can look too dark on white. Review the downloaded PNG in its intended scene, not only on a checkerboard. Keep the untouched original for comparison.
Adjusted pixels are not a quality score
The count reports pixels touched by the operation, not whether the result improved. Input limits are 4096 px per side and 16 million pixels. The corrected output is PNG.
Questions
Will it remove a solid white background?
No. Fully opaque pixels are not un-matted. Remove the background first; use this tool if the transparent result still has contaminated edges.
Why did the edge become darker?
The matte may be wrong or the edge RGB may already be clean. Reduce strength or compare against strength 0. Matte removal assumes a particular source blend; it is not a universal enhancement.
Why is the result fully transparent?
No pixels survived the selected cutoff. Lower it and rerun. A faint effect can have no fully opaque pixels even when it was visible in the original.
Should I trim every frame in a walk cycle?
Not if they need a common canvas. Independent crops can move the pivot, and this tool does not export crop-offset metadata. Leave trimming off for aligned frame sequences.
Does it overwrite the original?
No. The corrected PNG is a separate local download. Decoding and encoding can change file metadata, so keep the original even when the visible result looks right.
